Let's Get Cozy Predicting and Foreshadowing the Future!

If you are like me, you LOVE anything written by author Jan Brett. I have been using her stories, The Mitten, The Hat, and The Snowy Nap to work on predicting and foreshadowing for years. This year, she came out with a new story that goes perfectly with those stories. It is called Cozy.

This free activity pack will help your students predict, and recall all of the the foreshadowing Jan Brett uses in her borders with the story Cozy.

This adorable story is about a Musk Ox  in the Arctic that loses his family when a winter storm blows in. Soon many Arctic animals find their way into Cozy's long fur. Cozy is so kind and generous to let them all in, but he does have a few house rules. From the first read, I fell in love with this sweet character and story. I decided I needed to add this to my week and use it with my first graders.

Whenever we read Jan Brett stories, we focus on foreshadowing. Yes this is a BIG word for first graders. However, my kids know what it means and it only took a few times working on it to fully understand it. Never underestimate how smart their little brains are.

Before we begin any story, we work on predicting. This is a great way to grab their attention and get them wondering about the story. I read the title and show them the cover. Then they share some predictions. Our predictions need to be a smart guess.  Also, I explain to my students that Jan Brett has so much to say in her stories that she makes borders. Sometimes her borders tell what is happening with a character while the main text is showing the other characters. Usually on the right side, she gives you a peek at what will happen. This is what we call foreshadowing.

While reading the story, we take our time and really look at the pictures. We discuss what the other characters are doing and use the foreshadowing to predict what will happen next. When we finish, we go back to our seats and write or draw what we saw in the story.  Here is a special freebie I made just for you. It includes predicting, foreshadowing, and I even through in a retelling activity.

Did I mention we sing a foreshadowing song? We sing every new comprehension strategy we learn. Singing helps those auditory students remember. I can't hold a tune but I love to sing. I hired a real singer to record my songs the students. If you would like to grab this song, you can click here. I also have a bundle if you want to see all the songs we sing in our room throughout the year.

I have an entire Cozy Unit to go along with this adorable story if you want to check it out! There is a fun musk ox craft. My students loved the sequencing activities too.
