Zebra Day!

Zebra Day! - First Grade Roars!

As we are doing this safari unit, the kids are getting more and more excited.  Each morning they come in and ask what animal we will be learning about next!  Kids just love to learn about animals and their brains are little sponges.  I am amazed by all that they remember!

Hippo Day!

Hippo Day! - First Grade Roars!

We spent our day learning all about hippos.  We worked on fiction and non-fiction stories.  The children loved making our hippos today.  We used a large marshmellow cut in half to make the teeth.  I think they enjoyed eating the left overs more than the project!  One fun fact we learned today was that hippos make a red oil to protect their skin from being sunburned.  Enjoy our pictures.

Elephants - First Grade Roars!

This is a cute snack that one of my moms made for all of the students.  She is amazing!

Non-fiction items we completed today.

Fiction stories we read today.
Today we learned about elephants on our safari trip.  We read an amazing book called "Elephants Can Paint Too".  I never knew that they taught elephants to paint with their trunks.  My students were amazed to learn that elephants don't really eat peanuts. http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Elephants-Mini-Unit

Giraffes - First Grade Roars!

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/All-About-GiraffesThis week we are going on a Safari to Africa and learning about many different animals.  Today we learned about giraffes.  We made and read mini booklets, wrote about them, learned about their adaptations, and read a very fun fiction story called, "Giraffes Can't Dance".  We had fun making our very own giraffes to display.

Insect/Eric Carle Week

Insect/Eric Carle Week - First Grade Roars!

Insect and Eric Carle Books
This week we are reading Eric Carle Insect stories and learning about insects.  I have to admit that this is not my idea for the ladybugs, I found it on the web.  I couldn't resist making them.  These are some of my grouchiest faces:)  We had a lot of fun with this activity.  http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Eric-Carle-Literacy-Unit-for-the-Primary-Grades
