Kindness Activities with A Little Spot of Kindness

This year I wanted to begin promoting kindness from the very beginning of the year. I searched this summer for the perfect book and I found it. A Little Spot of Kindness written by Diane Alber was just what I needed to create kindness activities for my room, and set the stage for an amazing year.

This summer, I transformed my learning tree into a kindness tree. I made little spots with the ways we can show kindness printed on them. I chose yellow, green, and orange because those are my classroom colors. They are now hanging high for my students to see. I also took these same spots and laminated them and put them on a ring. They will be out in my reading center all year as a friendly reminder of the ways to show kindness.

After reading this adorable story we gathered together and sorted the scenario cards I made. I had all of the yellow kindness cards up before beginning.  I pulled one scenario out at a time and my students listened. We discussed each one and put it under the correct act of kindness. They really enjoyed doing this, and it was a great review from the book.

Then, we went back to our seats and wrote 4 ways we can show kindness. Since we are just starting the year in first grade, they could write, draw, or do both. They did an amazing job with this activity.

Next, we made our “Be Kind” spots.  They turned out so cute! I’m going to hang them around the room as a friendly reminder for us all year.

For writing, we made a class book. I love making class books because the children can revisit them all year and remember the story and inspiration for the book.

Finally, we learned about our kindness jar that I am going to implement for the year. On the left, I put 50 spots “aka pom poms” into the jar. Any time I see an act of kindness, the student will go add a spot to the orange jar.  I also let them pick out a color spot and add their name to it. Once they show an act of kindness, they get to put a little spot on their big spot.  On the first day, I was able to find 3 spots of kindness.

Once we have moved all 50 spots of kindness, I have a special surprise for them.  It is not a reward, treat or special day, it is more kindness activities.  Shhh don’t tell!  I made little kindness activities that we can do all year to show our special school staff kindness. We are going to spread the love to the other people in the building throughout the year. They are all easy simple things to implement and show our appreciation for all of the adults in the building.
