Are you looking for some fun and simple holiday crafts for your classroom? Here are 5 fun crafts that you can use with step by step instructions. I chose a variety of Christmas crafts and snow crafts in case you can't celebrate the holidays.

Christmas Tree Canvas Craft

These 5 fun holiday crafts are so much fun to. make in the classroom and made wonderful Christmas gifts for their families. Learn how to make two different snowman crafts, a reindeer ornament, a Christmas tree craft and grab a snow globe ornament freebie.
I have been doing this craft for years.  I will be honest, I have used wood that my husband had to cut,  and tiles that I purchased at the hardware store in the past. This year I am using these skinny canvases I bought through Amazon. They aren't breakable and I was able to purchase them for less than a dollar per canvas.  For this craft ,you need Christmas scrapbooking paper, wood scrapbooking paper, Modge Podge, paint brushes, canvases, and wooden stars. Here is how you do this project.

First, you have students cut their strips in order and lay out their design next to their canvas. I have three different containers of paper: red and green, green, and wood.

Once they have their design, they will paint Modge Podge on the entire canvas. Then they will lay one piece of paper at a time and Modge Podge over the paper. Don't worry, Modge Podge dries clear. Finally, you will attach the wooden star with an extra dab of glue.

They always turn out so cute every year, and this time I won't have to worry about breaking them!

Snowman Banner Craft

Another fun option that is very similar is this snowman craft. You can see the materials are almost the same. You could trade out the banner for the canvas and vise verse. For this craft you will need wooden banners, scrapbooking paper (whites with a variety of other colors), glitter, sharpies, and white pom poms 1/2 inch size (optional).

To create this craft, you start with the white paper. You can see here that I used 41/2 by 41/2 sized paper. I turned it over and was able to sketch 2 snowmen on the back. Once they have the sketch, they can cut out the snowman. This craft is done just like the one above. First, students Modge Podge the banner, Then they lay the snowman on top and Modge Podge again. I pre-cut orange triangles from scrapbooking paper and put out other colors so they can add accessories. The nice thing about scrapbooking paper is that the back side is usually white so they can draw before cutting. Once everything is on, I just sprinkled silver glitter over it and let it dry.
These banners came with string to hang them. I think they would look so cute hanging on a door or on a knob in the kitchen. Once they are dry, students can add arms and details with a sharpie marker.

Reindeer Ornaments

This year we will be trying this new craft. We will do this on my reindeer theme day as a fun little extra gift to our parents.

I pre-cut my pipe cleaners. Each child will need 4. Have them bend 2 of them together to make an antler.

The first thing I will have the students do is put their name and year on the back. Then, they will design a reindeer face with a sharpie. Finally, they will dab their finger in red paint to make the nose.

After the noses dries, which doesn't take long at all, add the string. Then, I placed wax paper on the table, flipped mine over and attached the antlers with Elmer's glue. If you want to speed up the process, a glue gun would attach them quickly and there would be less waiting.

This is an adorable keepsake for the tree that they can see year after year.

Snowman Socks

These 5 fun holiday crafts are so much fun to. make in the classroom and made wonderful Christmas gifts for their families. Learn how to make two different snowman crafts, a reindeer ornament, a Christmas tree craft and grab a snow globe ornament freebie.
I have been doing this fun craft for years. It is a great project to do one on one or with parent volunteers. It does take some time and adult help. Last year I invited parents to bring their glue guns in and come help. We made these for our classroom ledge in January and February and then I sent them home. Parents love to help and this is an easy way to get them involved.
Here is what you will need for this project: white tube sockspolyester fill or batting, dried beans or rice, large pom poms, small pom poms, orange felt noses, buttons, glue gun, and fleece strips. All of the accessories are optional and can be switched out. This is just what I offer to my students.
These 5 fun holiday crafts are so much fun to. make in the classroom and made wonderful Christmas gifts for their families. Learn how to make two different snowman crafts, a reindeer ornament, a Christmas tree craft and grab a snow globe ornament freebie.
Here is the procedure I use for this project. Step 1, turn the sock inside out. It looks fuzzier that way. Step 2, fill the sock with approx. 1 cup of beans or rice. Step 3, fill the sock with 3 handfuls of batting. Step 4, tie a scarf two-thirds of the way up.

Step 5, tie a rubber band around the top of the sock. Step 6, flip the top of the sock over to form a hat. Step 7, accessorize. I usually have students pick out what they want and then have an adult glue it all on. On the bottom, I use a sharpie marker to write their name.

The final goodie we will be making this year is a snow globe ornament. The ornament says "I heart you SNOW much". I took pictures of my students holding their hands out. For this craft, you will need the snow globe template, pictures of kids,  a sharpie marker, fake snow, hole punch, string, and lamination.

Here is how you do this fun project! First have your students pick out what color base they want. Then have them write their name and year on the back. Next, open the laminating sheet and place their picture and base together on the sheet. I suggest having an adult cut out the picture. Then, sprinkle the fake snow over their picture. Once it is all set, close the sheet and laminate it.

I have included a tracer that I place behind the lamination to help cut it out. Finally, hole punch it at the top and add whatever string you would like to use. Grab this goodie here!
I can't wait to make these fun holiday crafts in the classroom!

Five Fun Elf Activities for the Classroom and a Freebie

Elf Activities have become very common in the classroom with the invention of the Elf on the Shelf. Here are 5 fun elf activities I love to do in my classroom during the month of December.

Kindness Elf

I know many people use an elf on the shelf in their classroom. For years I have used my Kindness Elf. I don't use her as a threat for good behavior, instead she is used to spread kindness amongst our building. From the day she arrives, she comes with a note and a task that the students complete for a staff member or in our classroom. There is a fun little rhyming note that explains what they have to do each day. Since time is limited, it is often a quick note that is written or signed and given to the staff member. I have also included activities for them to work on teamwork, an activity for their family, and activities to build their math, reading and writing skills. There is also a little journal where students can record where the elf moved to each day in the room. P.S. there is a boy version too, I just happen to have a girl elf.
These 5 fun elf activities will bring your classroom to life the month of December. Students will work on spreading kindness when the elf visits the classroom. Elf literature suggestions are given for Pig the Elf and Memoirs of an Elf. Celebrate a fun elf theme day and work on elf centers and enjoy an elf snack. Don't forget to grab your elf freebie and work on adjectives the whole month of December. You will have a fun way to sort your students into groups too.

Memoirs of an Elf

As soon as I read this story, I knew I would be sharing it with my students for years to come. It is a holiday story written from the elf's point of view. We work on many reading strategies with this story.  I love the contemporary twist it has with the elf taking "elf"ies. We have been making elf head bands and taking "elf"ies ever since I incorporated this story in my classroom. These great elf activities can be found here.

Pig the Elf

Another amazing elf story that I introduced last year was Pig the Elf. My students love anything that has Pig the Pug written by Aaron Blabey because he is so funny. I love how these stories bring a very teachable lesson to the classroom whether you do a literacy extension or not. The lesson alone makes this a worthwhile read aloud. Not to mention, it will have your students just cracking up. We love doing the elf activities included in this Pig the Elf goodie packet too, especially making Pig.

Elf Day

Last year we had a special day filled with  Elf  Activities.  We called it ELF DAY.  I love doing themed days at the end of the year, so I thought I would try them right before winter break. During Elf Day, I read the stories mentioned above. I made a special banner and hung it in the room. The students wore their red, green stripes, and silly hats. I created elf centers around the room and the students work in groups to complete the centers. This was the perfect opportunity to do some running records and gather data before the end of the 2nd quarter while the students worked in groups. We usually do literacy centers in the morning and math centers in the afternoon. We also had a cute little elf snack and made an elf craft. They loved the themed day so much we will be doing a few more this year before break.

Elf Adjectives & Partner Cards Freebie

The final elf activity I will be doing this year will focus on adjectives. We will web different adjectives that describe an elf. I have created duplicate adjective cards that I will use to group my students for different activities throughout the month. I copied one green set and one red set. The green set has two matching adjectives. The red set has three matching adjectives.  When I want groups of two, we will use the green, and when I want groups of three, I will use the red. Every time we are being grouped, we will review what an adjective is and then draw the cards. This fun little grouping activity will remind them of adjectives all month long. You can grab these freebies for your room right here!

Engage your Students with Solve the Mystery Activities

Solve the Mystery Activities provide an engaging experience in the classroom while you review skills that have been taught. Students will work in groups to complete 9 different math and language arts task cards. Once they solve them correctly, they will receive a clue to the mystery. When they have all of the clues they can find out the who, the when, and the where, by process of elimination. The short little video introduces the challenge and gets them geared up for the amazing learning adventure.

I'm so excited to share with you how we have been reviewing skills in first grade with our Solve the Mystery Task Card Activities. These fun and engaging activities will keep your students excited about learning and hold their attention the entire time.

Here's How You Play the Solve the Mystery Activities

Each activity begins with a video I have created. The video is short, about a minute. The video introduces the problem to the children and asks for their help to solve the mystery. There are three underlying questions the students will need to find out, who, when, and where. I created a fun display that I keep up in my classroom at all times. I put it on a pocket chart so I can turn the cards around when we finish to find out eh who, when, and where, in the end.

Let's Get it Prepped!

Next, you will need to split your students into groups. They could do this independently but I think it works better in groups. I have 24 students so I do 8 groups of 3. I like to split them up with varying ability levels to make it fair, and so all groups have support.

Once the video has played, and they know what mystery they need to solve, I go over the task cards on the SMART board. By going over their tasks, this eliminates questions during the activity. After they know what to do, I set them loose. At the bottom of their packet, I write a number. This is the number of the task they need to go to first.   I included signs to display around the room so they can find each task card easily. I print 3 of each card in case multiple groups need to work on a task.

What Does the Teacher Do?

They are busy working for about an hour. The first time we completed one, I was surprised by how long it took. Now I  plan for about an hour and a half total.  While they work, I sit up front with the clues. Once they complete a task, they bring it up to me and I check it using the answer key. If it is right, they get the clue. At the bottom of each page, they glue their clue in their packet.

Native American Activities for Primary Children

In November, we spend a lot of time completing different Native American Activities. The students are fascinated by their lives and how they survived with what they had. It is enlightening and eye-opening for them to learn how life used to be long ago.

 Native American Graph

Iroquois

We spend a little bit of time each day learning about three different tribes. I start on the East coast and we learn about the Iroquois Native Americans.  First, we read the little mini book together. We have a lot of great discussions. This tribe is part of where we live in Ohio so it is easy for them to relate to the surroundings that the Native Americans lived in.

Native American Mini Book and Activities

After reading the mini book and discussing, I split my students into groups. Each group works on the review sheet together using the mini book as help.  Once we are finished completing the review sheet, we meet together to go over their food, clothing, shelter, and recreation. I made these posters to help them review.

Native American Picture Card ActivitiesAfter we have review, I split them into four different groups. Each group has to work together to make a visual representation of one of the four topics; food, shelter, recreation or food.  I tell them that their item has to fit into the palm of their hand. Once they have their item, they label it with white paper and we add it to a 12 by 18 sheet of construction paper.

Here is an example of the Iroquois Native American Activity

 Iroquois Graph

When we have finished our graph, we write about the tribe. They just share what they learned from all of the Native American activities we just completed.

Sioux

The second tribe we learn about are the Sioux Native Americans. This tribe is on the move and their food, shelter, clothing, and recreation are all a little different from the Iroquois.  We repeat the same process as before reading, reviewing, and creating the pieces to make the graph.

 Iroquois Graph

Hopi

The final tribe we learn more about are the Hopi Native Americans. This tribe is in the Southwest desert area. Their homes are vastly different from the other two tribes.

Hopi Graph

There is nothing better than seeing their art come to life and them learning by doing. This unit is short but fun. It provides them with a great background of the way Native Americans lived long ago.

 Native American Craft

As a fun cumulative project, we also each make our own Native American. They all turn out so different as they add their own designs to the deerskin outfits.

Kindness Activities with A Little Spot of Kindness

This year I wanted to begin promoting kindness from the very beginning of the year. I searched this summer for the perfect book and I found it. A Little Spot of Kindness written by Diane Alber was just what I needed to create kindness activities for my room, and set the stage for an amazing year.

These kindness activities are a perfect way to promote kindness in your classroom. It is perfect for back to school or any time of the year. Spread kindness and build character with this fun unit.

This summer, I transformed my learning tree into a kindness tree. I made little spots with the ways we can show kindness printed on them. I chose yellow, green, and orange because those are my classroom colors. They are now hanging high for my students to see. I also took these same spots and laminated them and put them on a ring. They will be out in my reading center all year as a friendly reminder of the ways to show kindness.

After reading this adorable story we gathered together and sorted the scenario cards I made. I had all of the yellow kindness cards up before beginning.  I pulled one scenario out at a time and my students listened. We discussed each one and put it under the correct act of kindness. They really enjoyed doing this, and it was a great review from the book.

Then, we went back to our seats and wrote 4 ways we can show kindness. Since we are just starting the year in first grade, they could write, draw, or do both. They did an amazing job with this activity.

Next, we made our "Be Kind" spots.  They turned out so cute! I'm going to hang them around the room as a friendly reminder for us all year.

For writing, we made a class book. I love making class books because the children can revisit them all year and remember the story and inspiration for the book.

Finally, we learned about our kindness jar that I am going to implement for the year. On the left, I put 50 spots "aka pom poms" into the jar. Any time I see an act of kindness, the student will go add a spot to the orange jar.  I also let them pick out a color spot and add their name to it. Once they show an act of kindness, they get to put a little spot on their big spot.  On the first day, I was able to find 3 spots of kindness.

Once we have moved all 50 spots of kindness, I have a special surprise for them.  It is not a reward, treat or special day, it is more kindness activities.  Shhh don't tell!  I made little kindness activities that we can do all year to show our special school staff kindness. We are going to spread the love to the other people in the building throughout the year. They are all easy simple things to implement and show our appreciation for all of the adults in the building.
